What is Tales of Eternia Remastered?
Tales of Eternia Remastered is a modernized version of the 2000 PlayStation RPG, remastered by TOSE and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The original Tales of Eternia (known as Tales of Destiny II in North America) was well-regarded but never got significant attention outside Japan after its initial release. This remaster is the most accessible the game has ever been — six platforms, quality-of-life features throughout, and both updated and original presentation options.
Story
The story follows Reid Hershel and his childhood friend Farah Oersted, who encounter a mysterious girl named Meredy falling from the sky. Meredy speaks an unknown language and brings news of a catastrophe: the Great Fall, a collision between their world Inferia and a world above called Celestia. If the Great Fall happens, both worlds are destroyed. Reid and Farah join Meredy on a race across both worlds to stop it.
The setup is classic late-PS1 JRPG — a group of young protagonists pulled into a world-ending crisis, traveling between two distinct civilizations with different cultures and technology levels. The twin-worlds structure gave the original Tales of Eternia a lot of narrative variety for its time.
Gameplay
Combat uses the Aggressive Linear Motion Battle System — the signature Tales series battle style that plays out in real time on a 2D plane. You chain combos, manage Arte (skill) usage, and coordinate with up to three party members who fight alongside you. It's faster and more action-oriented than most JRPGs of its era, and that snappy combat feel holds up.
The remaster adds several quality-of-life features that address the original's rough edges:
- Destination markers — so you're never wandering without a sense of direction
- Encounter rate toggle — turn random battles up, down, or off
- High-speed auto-battle — for grinding without sitting through every animation
- Toggle between updated and original presentation — play with remastered visuals or switch to the classic look
