What is Valor Mortis?
One More Level made their name with Ghostrunner, a precision first-person slasher built around momentum and one-hit kills. Valor Mortis keeps the first-person perspective but shifts the genre entirely — this is a soulslike action-RPG with deliberate, punishing combat rather than frictionless speed.
The setting is a dark alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars. Europe has been overrun by a mysterious plague that raises the dead, and the continent looks like a fever-dream version of the early 19th century — gunpowder weapons alongside monsters, the aesthetics of that era bent into something grimmer.
One More Level is working with Lyrical Games as an additional development partner on this project.
Story
You play as William, a soldier killed in battle and resurrected by the same plague that's transforming Europe. The setup is personal before it's epic — William is dead, brought back against his will, and operating in a world that's unraveling around him. The soulslike genre is a natural fit for a story about a soldier who dies and keeps returning to fight.
Gameplay
Combat is first-person and soulslike: deliberate timing, meaningful stamina management, and fights that punish mistakes. The Metroidvania structure means the world is designed with interconnected areas — you'll find paths blocked by obstacles that require new abilities to bypass, sending you back through previously explored zones with fresh options.
First-person soulslike is a narrow lane. Hellpoint and Dolmen tried it; Valor Mortis comes from a studio with demonstrated skill at first-person action, which is the harder half of the equation to get right. Whether the Metroidvania layer adds to that or complicates it will be the real test.
