Monster Hunter Stories 3 Gets Rudy DLC and Royal Monsters in First Post-Launch Update

Capcom used its June 25 Spotlight to drop the first wave of post-launch content for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, including a paid DLC and a free update that both went live the same day.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is Capcom's third entry in the spin-off RPG series set inside the Monster Hunter universe. You play as a Rider, someone who bonds with monsters called Monsties rather than slaying them outright. Combat is turn-based and built around a rock-paper-scissors system of attack types. You build a party, breed Monsties with the genes you want, and work through a story about twin Rathalos with opposite elemental powers. The game launched March 13, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Critics liked it. Metacritic scores landed at 86-87, and Steam reviews sit at around 81% positive from over 7,600 ratings. The game set a peak concurrent record for the Stories sub-series on Steam, hitting 54,778 players in the opening weekend. That beat Monster Hunter Stories 2 by nearly 20,000. It is not a massive blockbuster, but for a turn-based spin-off, those numbers are solid.

The Capcom Spotlight on June 25 announced two things dropping the same day. First: a paid DLC called "Additional Side Story: Rudy." This focuses on Rudy, the Royal Felyne character from the game, and ties back to lore from the original Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS. The catch is that it's short, around 30 minutes, adds no new monsters, and adds no new equipment. Player reaction has been split. Fans who love the character and the lore got a fun bite of extra story. Anyone expecting a meaty expansion came away disappointed. Worth knowing before you buy.

Second: a free update called Royal Monsters. These are harder versions of existing monsters that spawn in the field after you finish the main game. Capcom also added a tougher version of the final battle if you load a completed save. This is the endgame content the community had been asking for. No new monsters, but genuine post-credits challenge for players who have been sitting at the level cap looking for something to push against.

The PS Store also launched its first discount on the game around the same time, which pulled in players who were on the fence at full price.

Why it's blowing up right now

The Capcom Spotlight June 25 put Monster Hunter Stories 3 back in the conversation overnight. Search interest spiked hard on June 26, the day after the reveal. The Rudy DLC dropped immediately with no wait, which kept the momentum going. And starting June 29, Monster Hunter Now runs a crossover event called "The Kingdom Castaway" through July 19. You can play a limited collaboration story with Rudy in the mobile game and earn exclusive Rudy Mask layered equipment. That crossover pulls in MH Now's active player base, many of whom may not have tried Stories 3 yet. The combination of a same-day drop, a free endgame update, a sale on PS Store, and a mobile crossover all hitting within days of each other is what pushed the game back into feeds this week.
