Final Fantasy XVI Is Free on PS Plus This Month, and Lapsed Fans Are Diving Back In

Final Fantasy XVI hit the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog this month. If you have the Extra or Premium tier, it is free to download and play right now. Sony added it on June 16, 2026, and that is why a 2023 game is suddenly all over feeds again.

Here is the short version. FF16 is Square Enix's big dark-fantasy action RPG. You play Clive Rosfield, sworn protector of his younger brother Joshua, in a falling world called Valisthea. The story is heavy: revenge, war between nations, and people who can turn into giant summons called Eikons. It is the first mainline Final Fantasy built as a real-time action game, not a turn-based one. The combat team had Devil May Cry pedigree, and you feel it. Combos, dodges, stagger meters, and boss fights the size of skyscrapers.

The reason people are jumping in now is simple. It is free if you already pay for the right PS Plus tier. The base Essential plan does not include the Game Catalog, so check what you have. Extra and Premium both get FF16. The game became available globally on June 16, and it stays in the catalog as long as Sony keeps it there, which is usually several months.

Is it actually good? Yes, with one honest caveat. It sits around 87 on Metacritic, which is strong. Most people love the spectacle, the voice acting, and the boss set pieces. The pushback is about the side quests, which can feel like filler, and the fact that it leans more action than classic RPG. If you came for deep party menus and turn-based tactics, this is not that. If you want a cinematic, hard-hitting single-player ride, it delivers.

Two story add-ons exist if you finish the main game and want more. Echoes of the Fallen is a tighter dungeon-style chapter. The Rising Tide adds a new region, a new Eikon in Leviathan, and some of the toughest fights in the whole game. Neither is included free with the PS Plus catalog version by default, so you would buy those separately if you want them. The Rising Tide is the one most fans point to as worth it.

Not on PlayStation? You still have options. FF16 came to PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store back in September 2024, and it also runs on Xbox Series X and Series S. The PC version goes on sale often. At the time of writing it is discounted on Steam, so if you do not have PS Plus, that is the cheaper road in than a full-price console copy.
